Mémoire de la Boue - Mardi Gras

Mémoire de la Boue

fr., trans., - The memory of the mud. Ancestral, genetic or inherited memory.

Some traditions are so much a part of who we are they seem to not have been learned but inherited. The Courir de Mardi Gras and the boucherie bring us to a primal place. A place seeming distant from our immediate reality. A realm odd, fascinating, sometimes shocking, often time joyous. A realm where we are led by emotion, wonder and desire.

I started photographing the Courier de Mardi Gras and the boucheries as a teenager. This was the first time that I saw my culture as important. Something about seeing these events, frozen still on a 4”x6” piece of paper allowed me to see something special where I hadn’t before.

Every year is an investigation. Every Mardi Gras, every boucherie, I am trying to distill them down to their essence to understand my culture, my community and myself better. These photographs represent my best effort to depict something that maybe can only be experienced. Something that maybe can only be inherited.
